What can I expect?

What makes a city the capital of its country? Chile has developed economically very quickly in the last few years and at the same time, it has managed to both maintain and reinvent its traditional constructions. Old heritage buildings coexist with new ones, including the tallest in Latin America. New forms of art, food, and languages mingle with the old. You will learn about the process of productions of wines that have made the country famous, visit the old port in the now picturesque, cultural city of Valparaíso, and breath the pure air of the Andes mountain range visiting its glaciers, hot springs and lakes. We will have four days to get to know Chile, its “crazy geography” (as described by a local writer) and fascinating culture, both in Santiago and nearby areas, all as wonderful and contradictory as the city itself.

Summary

Chile is a country of geographical and cultural contrasts: Santiago, its capital, is a microcosm that both reflects and intensifies those contrasts. Surrounded by mountains, known for its culture, history, and exuberant geography, this beautiful, vibrant city is a window to the variety and quick changes of the nation. We will discover part of the Andes mountain range through its glaciers and hot springs, taste some of the world-wide famous wines of the area, and visit one of most important cultural nearby areas: the unique, fascinating old port of Valparaiso. We will also be able to learn about the heritage sites of Santiago. By the hand of its own inhabitants, we will understand how this city was formed and is still forming right before our eyes. After visiting Santiago, neither the city nor the visitor remains the same.

ITINERARY

Santiago City Tour

On the first day the big capital will welcome us. Our way from the airport to your hotel will show us part of the city. We will also get tips about nearby places where you can eat and walk around safely.  Then we will start our Santiago City Tour, which will take us to all the heritage sites of Santiago: the government house and its fascinating history, the Santa Lucia Hill with its old fortresses, the multicultural Plaza de Armas, the picturesque Central Market, and some of the historial neighborhoods, such as Lastarria, Bellas Artes and Santiago Centro. Then we will have lunch in one of the typical restaurants that our guide will recommend us.

After lunch we will head towards one of the most important wineries of Chile: Cousiño de Macul Winery, located at the feet of the Andes mountain range. Here you will taste its delicious wines and learn about the production and sales process of the wine, as well as about the history of winery, that goes back to the XVI century and protected types of grape that were affected by European plagues and would not have survived otherwise.

Finally, we will be returning to our hotel then to have the rest of the day at leisure.

Valparaíso and Wines

Our guide will come to pick you up at 9 in the morning to start heading toward the port city of Valparaiso. On our way to Valparaiso we will make a stop in Casablanca Valley to get to know and taste some of the best wines of the area. Upon our arrival to Valparaiso, we will discover the best of the city and we will see why it is known as the “twin city of San Francisco:” its houses built on steep hills, street art, old restaurants, and art festivals have turned it from traditional port to the capital of Chilean cultural life, in addition to a World Heritage Site protected by UNESCO. We will take the elevators to the top of hills such as Cerro Alegre and Cerro Artillería, pass by the Open Sky Museum and part of the port, ancient churches, and most significant squares with their curious stories. After lunch, we will head to explore Viña del Mar, a city close to Valparaiso that also has a lot to show us, among other things, beautiful gardens and famous floral decorations around the city, and interesting promenades next to the ocean. At approximately 6 PM we will start heading back to Santiago to get ready for our next day.

Road Trip Cajón del Maipo or Glaciers & Hot Springs

Our breakfast will be at 7:30 am today and then our guide will pick us up to start our mountain adventure at the Cajón del Maipo: a large canyon where the Maipo river flows down, characterized by its mountain nature, rock walls, and a great deal of local culture. In all the options provided above, we will have a long-lasting experience in the heart of the Andes mountain range of the Central Chile, having an opportunity to observe all the living species of the area in all its magnitude.
