  • Enjoy a local BBQ with stunning views of the hanging glacier of El Morado Glacier
  • Capture panoramas of El Cajón de Maipo, jagged peaks and valleys

At the Horses and Glaciers tour, you will go on a horseback riding through the beautiful valley of the Sands reaching the El Morado Glacier (around 3,000 m of altitude), where we enjoy a nice traditional barbecue next to the Morado Lagoon. You travel from Santiago to San José de Maipo, where we get to Baños Morales, all the way up in the middle of the Andes mountains. There, we set up our horses and start this horseback ride up to the glacier, which will culminate with a glacier-side barbecue. If you do not have any experience riding a horse, don’t worry! The owners of the horses will tell you everything you need to know.

Itinerary Details

The idea is to have a very early breakfast, as our van will pick us up at 7 am to head to Cajón del Maipo, around an hour outside of Santiago. It is a place of bountiful nature and beautiful mountains. From here, we will head to the end of the trail, at the foot of the San José de Maipo volcano, or the little town of Baños Morales. There, we will meet our local guide and his horses, receive instructions on safety and how to maneuver them, and have a short warm-up to get our bodies ready.

The Valle de las Arenas is one of the region’s most scenic valleys, with huge walls of varying colors, and a river that paints the basin with splashes of green. We will take our horses upward for around three hours until we arrive at a large lagoon, surrounded by a glacier, where we can take a break and have lunch. Our tour guide, along with the muleteer, will prepare a delicious mountain-style barbecue for us. Meanwhile, we will be able to explore the surrounding area, take some photos and enjoy the setting. When lunch is ready, we will get together to share our meal with our tour guide and muleteer, listen to some stories about the region, and learn a little about life in the mountains.

After lunch, we will get back on our horses and start heading back. Around two hours later, we will arrive back at our starting point, where our van will be ready and waiting to take us back to Santiago. We will arrive at the hotel at around 8 pm.
