Summary

This part of Chile has an abundance of perfectly tranquil lakes such as Llanquihue and Todos los Santos, but in addition to these, there are various rivers, such as the Petrohué, world-renowned for their beauty, the unforgettable deep green of the rainforest to the south and the steaming line of volcanoes which call out to the explorer, “This is Chilean Patagonia”. There is also the mysterious island of Chiloé, whose roots are steeped in myths, where ancient churches, declared world heritage monuments by the UNESCO, are found. This is a trip that unites in a unique way the impressive natural beauty of the south, and the most powerful culture and folklore of the country.

ITINERARY

Llanquihue & Frutillar

After our arrival to Puerto Montt, the capital of the district, our van will pick us up at the airport and drive us to Puerto Varas. This city, located on the shore of Llanquihue lake, had a complex history during the Spanish Conquest, and was built by a German settler at the end of the nineteenth century. We will be dropped off at our hotel where we can check in and have lunch on our own.

During the afternoon, a regular service van will pick us at the hotel at a time confirmed upon arrival to the hotel. Our first stop will be at Llanquihue, a small industrial city which has the same name as the beautiful lake that we will be visiting during this trip. We will then continue to Frutillar, a lakeside village that both in its cuisine and architecture reveals the strong influence of German immigration in the nineteenth century: actually, strudel and kuchen are specialties of this town. This village is also known as the “Music City,” as it is home of one of the most important classic music and jazz festivals in Chile. We will also visit the local Colonial Museum, centered on the German culture of the area (entrance fee to the museum is included) and we will have time to stroll around the lake beach and pier before going back to our hotel.

Volcanoes, Rivers & Lakes

Did you know that the first time Charles Darwin saw the Osorno volcano, it happened to be erupting? Fortunately, the last eruption occurred in 1869 and nowadays it is a calm, gorgeous landmark. We owe part of the amazing landscapes we see on this trip to the latest series of eruptions.

Today our van will pick us up at our hotel and drive us towards the Andes mountain range. On our way, we will see many rural villages; after passing Villa Ensenada, the most important of them and the furthest one to the east of Lago Llanquihue, we will start our way up to the Osorno volcano. Its maximum altitude is 2,652 m / 8,700 ft. We will drive up only until the lookout point at 1,240 m / 4,068 ft, from where we will have a stunning view of the Lake District on the west, and the Andes range on the east. The last eruption of the Osorno volcano in the nineteenth century had an unexpected, yet welcomed effect: it’s lava followed the trail of the Petrohué River (a name that means in mapudungun, the native language of the Mapuche, “place of smoke”). Thus the amazing falls that we will visit next were formed. We will follow a trail on the southern slope of the volcano and after approximately 2 hours (6 km/ 3 mi), we will reach the famous Petrohué Falls, with its characteristic green-hued waters. Here we can walk on the pathways while we enjoy both the falls and the wonderful surrounding nature.

Finally, we will continue our trip by van to Todos los Santos Lake (also known as “Emerald Lake” due to the color of its waters), were we can walk on the volcanic stone beach and admire the beautiful, typical Chilean trees of the area, the ulmo and the coihue. After this relaxing moment, we will head back to our hotel to get some rest before our exciting next day.

Short Itinerary

  • Visit to Osorno Volcano and it’s view point

Immersed at the big Island of Chiloé

How does continental Chile relate to the island with the most powerful culture and myths? We will discover it today, when we head to the village of Pargua in order to board the ferry that crosses the Chacao channel towards the mysterious island of Chiloé, the main one of the archipelago of the same name. On land, the ferry still the only way to arrive to the island, since controversial plans to build a bridge are yet to be successful. Thus, we are very likely to see the Chilean dolphin, one of the smallest species of the world, following our ferry on our way to the island. There we will encounter Chiloé and its people: the “Chilotes,” who for many years have lived off fishing, which has clearly influenced its characteristic cuisine, centered on seafood. Moreover, we will visit the beautiful churches built after the arrival of the Spanish conquerors and the conversion to Catholicism of the local Huilliche natives. These wooden-tiled churches, that have endured both weather and the passing of time, are now rightly declared world heritage sites by UNESCO.

October to March (Spring & Summer) – Visit Ancud, Castro & Dalcahue

At our arrival on the island, we will head south to Dalcahue, a village located facing the continent, were we will visit the local market and one of its churches, declared National Monument. We will continue our trip to Castro, Chiloe’s capital city. One of its most characteristic constructions are the impressive and multi-colored “palafitos,” unique stilt houses with a wooden base tall enough to endure the rising of tides. We will also visit the main square and its church before heading north to visit the city of Ancud. Here we will visit the remains of a Spaniard fort, learn more about the history of the Conquest, and enter the Ancud Museum, a place of unforgettable architecture and fundamental for its preservation of the cultural and historical heritage of the area. We will also go to the local market, and then our guide will take us to a local restaurant in Chiloe were we will enjoy lunch. Then we will take the ferry back to our hotel.

April to October (Autumn & Winter) – Visit to Caulín & Ancud.

After disembarking from the ferry, we will visit Caulín, its “Bird Sanctuary,” and an oyster farm, were we can taste delicious plates prepared with this delicacy (not included). The uniqueness of the Bird Sanctuary is that, due to its distance from the continent, species have developed features that cannot be found anywhere else in Chile or the world. Moreover, this is a resting place preferred by many migrant birds. After this experience with nature, we will focus on culture: we will visit the city of Ancud, its main square, its church, the local market, the museum, and we will learn a bit of its history by getting familiar with the great stories and uncanny legends that the place harbors. During our return, our local guide will take us to a local restaurant for lunch, and then we will head to our hotel in Puerto Varas.
