Summary

This programme will take place during the winter season in Chilean Patagonia, the southernmost region of the country where the eighth wonder of the world is found: Torres del Paine National Park. Here, you will go on the “W” winter circuit, consisting of 4 days’ trekking, hiking, and sailing and you will enjoy unique landscapes steeped in history and treasured natural attractions including fjords, mountains, lakes, glaciers, canals, and islands. This programme has been designed for adventurers and lovers of sport in remote places, as it requires good physical fitness and the ability to adapt to unstable weather conditions, typically rainy and cold or temperate. You will have a unique experience in the Andes in Chilean Patagonia!

ITINERARY

Torres del Paine National Park

*Important:

– Winter Season: The programme will run from 1st May to the 28th August 2018.

– Facilities: During the winter W, bathrooms and showers in the circuit facilities will not be available.

– Weather: In winter, the temperature drops considerably, sometimes below zero.

Once you arrive at the airport in Punta Arenas, a van will be waiting to take you to Puerto Natales, where you’ll meet the guide in charge of the programme at 3 pm at the Fantástico Sur office for a quick introductory talk. Once this is over, you will continue on to the next campsite, located in Torres del Paine National Park, where you can rest and enjoy dinner.

Torres del Paine National Park

Tower Base W circuit

After breakfast, the National Park excursion will begin, heading towards the base of the “towers”. This is a 9-hour trek spanning around 19.5 kilometers. On it, you will be able to enjoy the amazing landscape, made up of rivers, forests, native fauna, lakes, and mountains.

The first leg will cover the pampa and ascending terrain where you’ll walk towards the “Paso de Los Vientos”. From there, you’ll have an extraordinary view of the valley, lakes, and glaciers. Then you will continue until you reach the Chileno shelter and enter a beech forest to find the moraine, which is considered to be the most complex part of the trek. After this section, you will arrive at the spectacular Base Torres viewpoint, where you’ll have time to rest, observe the amazing rock formations, take photos and enjoy a delicious packed lunch among the mountains. Then, you will begin your descent towards the Estancia section for dinner and to prepare for the following day.

Tower Base W circuit

Frances Sector

Once you are up, you will meet with the guide and begin walking towards the Frances sector. The first leg will cover around 13.5 kilometers, during which time you will walk along the edge of Lake Nordenskjöld, the Almirante Nieto hill, and the imposing Cuernos del Paine. During the rest of the journey, you’ll enjoy sights of the Cuernos, hanging glaciers, lakes, and flora and fauna native to the region. Once you reach the campsite in the Frances sector, a delicious meal will be waiting for you.

Frances Sector

Frances Valley

Once you’ve enjoyed a tasty breakfast, you’ll begin a new trek towards the Frances Valley. The first section will consist of a gentle walk towards the Italiano campsite, where you will begin your ascent up the River Frances Valley through a forest to reach the Francés viewpoint, where you’ll be able to see the valley and the Paine Grande, Catedral, Hoja, Máscara, Espada, Aleta de Tiburón and Cuerno Norte hills. Once you have rested at the viewpoint, you will begin your descent towards the Paine Grande shelter.

Frances Valley

Glacier Grey

After having breakfast at the shelter, you’ll begin the last leg of the “W” circuit, where you can explore the third milestone in the park, Glacier Grey. In this part of the programme, you will walk alongside the Paine Grande hill, where you will be able to observe hanging glaciers and the Ñirres and Coigües forests. Then, you will arrive at the first viewpoint of Lake Grey, where you’ll have time to observe the amazing views. After that, you will continue walking towards the Grey shelter, where you will board the 11:30 am catamaran and go on a sailing trip where you will observe the glacier up close as well as Nothofagus forests and if you are lucky, spot some endangered South Andean deer. It will be an unforgettable experience! After such an amazing day, you will continue sailing until you reach the Hotel Lago Grey sector, where you will start your return journey to Puerto Natales and stay in a hotel there to rest and recharge.

Glacier Grey

Last Day

The last day – depending on your flight time, you will have time to enjoy the surrounding areas of Puerto Natales. At an agreed time, you will take the bus (included) back to the airport to catch your return flight to Santiago.
